So you think you have found a fairytale house that will be just gorgeous when you get it all fixed up? You know you are going to have to invest some money and a lot of hard work to make it become the dream house that you know it can be and you can not wait to sign those papers so you can get the projects started. Older homes can be a good investment when the price is right and you know it will be the perfect place for you and your family to live. It could be the house and the property combined that makes that particular place so appealing. The house could be very old even and have a rich history to go along with it. It could be its specific architectural style that you love and they just do not build them that way anymore. It might just be that it is large and rambling without plenty of space for everyone and everything.
Since you probably already know that very old homes can have a lot of problems, because it is not likely that you will get a completely renovated one at a good price, you will expect the one you are thinking of buying will have some too. Even if the real estate company or seller that is showing you the home provides you with a list of problems that the home has, you should still consider having in inspected your self. Even if the mortgage company or bank that you will probably use has an appraisal done, this might not be the same as a thorough inspection.
This can be important because a professional inspector might delve a little deeper into the bones of the home and discover whether there could be foundational issues.
